Linear Foreign Body

Linear Foreign Body is a serious and dangerous condition where a string,carpet or plastic that the animal ate, is left attached under the tongue of the animal and the rest of the foreign body continues towards the stomach and the small intestine. There are cases that the linear foreign body is fully swallowed and it’s attached on the pylorus of the stomach and the rest goes to the small intestine.If left untreated this condition can become lethal.
The clinical signs include vomiting, regurgitation, ptyalism(hypersalivation), inappetence, anorexia, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain and dehydration.
The diagnosis is done with the clinical examination and the use of Ultrasonography and abdominal x-rays.
Linear foreign bodys can be treated only surgically with the techniques of gastrotomy and enterotomy/ies.
